What is a board?

In short, a board can be described as a committee or governing body, having supervisory powers and is elected by its members. A board provides oversight to an organizations activities and operations.

To develop the organizations:

  • vision and guidelines
  • mandate and beliefs

  • process/methods of evaluation

To maintain:

  • financial health of the organization
  • human capavity

To oversee and direct operations and performance:

  • of the board and its members
  • of organizational structure
  • within legal requirements

Ensure community relations by:

  • developing an effective communications plan
  • adapting to the needs of consumers
  • finding effective ways to meet those needs
  • maintaining transparency

Board/Group Development

Before looking at the problems of running an organization the board first has to look at how the group was developed and assess if the group functioning in a well planned and organized manor? Unprofessional, disorganized groups will turn off potential members or volunteers. The board is more likely to have success if the group contains some of the following aspects and there will be increased willingness of participants to share in the responsibility of its functioning.
