Characteristics of a Leader

In many situations in smaller Cumberland County organizations, the role of leading a group meeting, discussion or organizing volunteers is not the responsibility of only one person, but is actually the responsibility of several, if not all members of the group. Leadership roles can be shared or interchangeable. People look to leaders for assistance and guidance while seeing their leaders as mentors; someone who they trust and look up to. As a leader you do not have to be a trained professional, however, having some of the following characteristics or use of the following practices is an asset.

  • Accept peoples differences
  • Open /making others feel at ease around you. Are you easy to talk to?
  • Active listening / allowing others to explain before giving advice.

  • Insightful / Do you notice potential problems and prevent them?
  • Can you handle conflict?
  • Can you set goals? Plan programs/events, can you identify what needs to be done.
