CREDA encourages Cumberland County based start-up business ventures with a new knowledge-based product or service to consider entering the 1-3 Technology Start-Up Competition. The province- wide competition, sponsored by InNOVAcorp, will take place simultaneously in five geographic zones across Nova Scotia. Zone 1 includes Cumberland, Colchester, Pictou, Antigonish and Guysborough counties.

Each first place zone winner will receive a $100,000 prize package, and each second place zone winner will receive a $40,000 prize package to be used towards the establishment or further development of their start-up ventures. Prize packages are a combination of cash and in-kind contributions including support and resources in the form of expertise in areas such as legal and accounting, as well as funding and seed investment. At the end of the competition, one provincial winner will be selected from among the five first place zone winners, and will be awarded a $100,000 seed investment from InNOVAcorp.

Entrepreneurs have until 5 p.m. on Tuesday, October 9 to submit round one entries. The competition has three rounds. Finalists will get professional assistance to polish their plans during the competition’s third and final round. The five zone winners will be announced on December 20, and the provincial winner will be announced on February 12. Submissions can be completed on-line at www.innovacorp.ca.

Entrepreneurs thinking of starting a new business or expanding their current enterprise are encouraged to attend the Parrsboro Trade Fair on Thursday, September 13 from noon to 6 p.m. at the Fundy Geological Museum in Parrsboro.

Sponsored by the Parrsboro and District Board of Trade, CREDA, Nova Scotia Business Inc. and the Nova Scotia Department of Economic Development, the Trade Fair will provide a forum for funding and resource partners to discuss opportunities and resources with entrepreneurs from Parrsboro and area. A number of departments and agencies will have exhibits set up and representatives will be on hand to discuss the programs and services that are available to encourage new business development.

There is no fee to attend the Trade Fair, which is open to all interested. There will be a barbeque from noon to 2 p.m. with proceeds going to the South Cumberland Memorial Hospital in Parrsboro and the Bayview Memorial Health Centre in Advocate.
