With gas prices continuing to escalate why not spend you weekends or summer vacation discovering what is available right here in Cumberland County. For example the new Joggins Fossil Centre features an extensive collection of fossil specimens, exhibits and displays depicting the rich geological history of the Joggins Fossil Cliffs, the history of scientific discovery at Joggins, and the history of coal mining that shaped the local community.
In addition to a large exhibit gallery, there is also a visitor information centre; gift shop; both an indoor and outdoor café, and access to the beach and cliffs via a set of stairs. Guided tours of the 14.7-kilometre stretch of protected sea cliffs and beach are also available.
"Green Technology” is an integral component within the Centre. Green features of the award winning design include an on-site 50 kilowatt wind turbine generator, a solar heating system to preheat the hot water for the building, and a living vegetation roof.
The Centre is now open daily from 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., and will open an hour earlier and close one half hour later between July 1st and September 3rd. Admission is $8 for adults, $6 for students and seniors, while children under 8 get in free.

The Province of Nova Scotia has committed to extending high-speed Internet access to all Nova Scotians by the end of 2009. Seaside High-Speed has been contracted to provide broadband to Cumberland County.
Currently, Seaside is designing their 'build' for the county. This means they are identifying existing towers or new sites that will successfully transmit wireless signals to civic addresses currently without high-speed Internet service. Once a proposed site is deemed suitable, landowners will be contacted, agreements negotiated, and all the required approvals and permits obtained.
When all of the necessary approvals are in place, Seaside High-Speed can begin to install transmitters on the poles and towers and launch high-speed Internet service. Transmitters are used to send the wireless high-speed signals to homes and businesses in the area of the pole or tower. Because of the rugged nature of Nova Scotia’s landscape, some people will wait longer than others for high-speed Internet. But it is important to remember that the goal is to provide service to every Nova Scotian by the end of 2009 at the latest. For more information contact 1-888-965-5511.
