Biographical
sketch: Josiah Black was born in 1795. He was the son of Thomas
Stocks Black, who immigrated to Nova Scotia in 1775, and grandson
of William Black. Josiah settled on a portion of his father's
land in Amherst, married Hannah Embree and later became involved
in the timber trade. Hannah and Josiah had nine children,
including Thomas Reuben Black who served in the Nova Scotia
House of Assembly and later became a senator. Josiah died
in 1887.
Scope
and content: Fonds consists of one lesson book used by Josiah
Black for math and accounting exercises, Black's daybook for
the sale of timber and agricultural goods (1830-1860), and
a waste book reused by Black to record the receipt of monies
due to him.
