Biographical
sketch: W. Frederick Donkin, of Amherst, Nova Scotia, Worked
as a lawyer, insurance agent, town clerk and treasurer, and
real estate agent. He was an agent for the Provident Mutual
Association and the North American Life Assurance Agent. In
1890, he became clerk and treasurer for the Town of Amherst.
In 1907, Donkin became the president the Canadian Beverages
Co. Ltd. He was a member of the Trinity United Church, acted
as Chairman of the Investigating Committee for the Mason Acacia
Lodge and was a member of numerous local organizations.
Custodial
history: The Donkin records were originally part of the Hector
Grimely estate. They were Donated to the CCMA in 1979 by the
Christ Church Corporation.
Scope
and content: Fonds consist of records created and/or used
by Donkin while he was Town clerk, a lawyer, and an insurance
agent. The Town records consist of Cumberland County Court
case records, which contain such items as summons and decisions,
Municipal or Police Court Records, and Magistrates Court records.
Records of the Town of Amherst also include correspondence
regarding the mayor, Returned Soldiers Employment Committee,
Temperance, Amherst Fire Company, and communications with
councilors and the mayor. Some Town financial records are
also included in this fonds. Records regarding Donkin's position
with the North American Life Assurance Company and the provident
Mutual Association include policy information and correspondence.
Some correspondence and other records relate to his law practice
are also included.
